Your tattoo experience doesn’t conclude when your artist puts down their tools. It continues with the essential step of tattoo aftercare, which demands time and patience but promises long-lasting results that make the process worthwhile.
Here are crucial points to follow during your tattoo healing journey:
On the first night, it’s common for your tattoo to still ooze some blood. As this blood dries, it might adhere to your clothing or bedding. In such cases, handle it with care—never force or be rough with it. Instead, if the fabric sticks, moisten the area with lukewarm water and gently slide it off.
Daily Cleansing. Typically, you can remove the bandage and clean your tattoo after at least 5 hours. Keeping the area clean is paramount in preventing bacterial infection. Gently rinse your tattoo regularly, especially after strenuous activities. To minimize infection risks, steer clear of swimming in pools, lakes, seas, or oceans during this healing period.
Your choice of moisturizer may vary depending on your tattoo artist’s recommendation. It is crucial, however, to avoid scented creams or lotions, as harsh chemicals and fragrances can irritate and harm freshly tattooed skin.
Opt for a moisturizer that allows your skin to breathe. Ensure the area is completely dry before applying aftercare moisturizer. Well-moisturized skin is less likely to develop scabs, and preventing flaking skin can accelerate wound healing.
Protecting your tattoo from the sun is vital in tattoo care. Ideally, keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight, covering it with clothing or a bandage when exposure is unavoidable. When stepping into the sun, always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 50. Sun exposure can lead to damage and compromise the longevity of your tattoo.
Remove the Bandage and Clean. Before you begin, ensure your hands are clean, and you have unscented antibacterial soap on hand. Avoid soaps with fragrances, moisture beads, or scrubs. You don’t need to re-bandage your tattoo, but remember that it’s still a wound when unwrapped, susceptible to dirt and bacteria. Avoid direct contact with any surfaces.
Apply Aquaphor or Bacitracin 2-3 times daily for the initial 5-7 days, or until your tattoo begins to peel like a sunburn. Once peeling starts, switch to a fragrance-free lotion for an additional 2 weeks.
Expect your tattoo to be completely healed within 2-4 weeks. If you have sensitive skin and experience breakouts from the lotion, reduce the frequency of application.
After a few days, your tattoo may become itchy or develop flaky scabs. Keep it well moisturized, and these scabs will gradually dissipate.
Regular tattoo care is essential to prevent infection and safeguard both your skin and your tattoo, ensuring its longevity.
